Local Roundup: KVA claims golf win in Oxford
Kerr-Vance came out on top against J.F. Webb in Thursday’s nine-hole tilt at Oxford’s Thorndale Country Club.
The Spartans shot 172 to Webb’s 199.
KVA’s Daniel Burnette was the low medalist with a 39. He was followed for the Spartans by Brandon Dickerson (42), Joseph Burnette (45), Morgan Watkins (46), Jake Ruggles (46), and seventh-grader Reid Bridges (47).
“We’re showing improvement every day,” said KVA coach Dave Carrier. “With more time on the course, we should continue to get better.”
Taylor Cook led Webb with a 44 and Zach Porterfield shot a 48 for the Warriors.
“We really enjoy playing KVA,” said Webb coach John Hunt, “and look forward in three weeks playing them at Henderson Country Club.”
Cook missed the Warriors’ conference meet Monday in Raleigh.
Host Cardinal Gibbons won the meet with a 320, edging Chapel Hill’s 321.
The top two teams were followed by Orange’s 427, Northern Vance’s 432, Southern Vance’s 435, and Webb’s 436.
Sophomore Michael Hancock led the Warriors with a 94.
The next 3-A Carolina Conference match is Monday in Chapel Hill.
Spartan soccer draws with Rocky Mount Academy
Kerr-Vance played Rocky Mount Academy to a nil-nil draw Thursday night.
Spartan coach Amy Johnson said Bryles Cutts played well for the Spartans along with Rebeeca Ross, Rachel Ross, Price Wester, and Cassidy Tucker.
Jessica Darnell had the clean sheet in net for KVA, which visits Northern Vance Friday.
