Local Roundup: Warriors suffer second straight loss
J.F. Webb fell to 10-3 on the season after a 65-52 defeat to High Point Christian Saturday at the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Hoops Invitational.
The Warriors lost to prep powerhouse Word of God Friday night in the semifinals of the Shavlik Randolph Bracket. Word of God and New Hampton, N.H. were scheduled to meet in the championship game of the bracket Saturday night.
Isaiah Hicks had 12 points for Webb in Saturday’s third-place game and Mitron Terry had six. Tyrek Beverly led the Warriors with 16.
Webb was down 29-23 at halftime and 44-30 entering the fourth quarter.
High Point Christian is led by Jackson Kent, a 6-foot-7 James Madison commit, and point guard Diante Baldwin, a UNC-Greensboro commit. Kent tallied 11 against the Warriors and Baldwin had eight. Mike Kobani had a game-high 22 points for the Cougars.
Hicks had 24 points and nine rebounds Friday against Word of God and Terry finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Webb trailed 57-52 with 3:21 left in the game and was down 30-27 at halftime.
The Warriors host Cardinal Gibbons Jan. 11.
Brandon leads Northern boys at East Lincoln
The Northern Vance varsity boys basketball team finished 0-3 at the East Lincoln Winter Jam after Saturday’s 58-42 loss to Harrisburg Hickory Ridge.
The Vikings opened with a 58-40 loss to Charlotte Mallard Creek Thursday before a 56-48 defeat to East Lincoln Friday. Mallard Creek is one of the top-rated teams in 4-A and advanced to face another talented 4-A school, Ardrey Kell of Charlotte.
Northern was close entering the fourth quarter Saturday before Hickory Ridge pulled away.
Viking coach Wilton Baskett said his team got a step back in the tourney.
“I do think we’ve gotten better as a team,” he said. “We came back real strong against East Lincoln. It was definitely a winnable game that got away from us at the end.”
Le’Darius Brandon made the all-tournament team for Northern, averaging 18.3 points per game. He had 27 against East Lincoln, most of which came in the second half.
James Alexander had seven points for the Vikings Saturday. Tavin Moore had nine points against Mallard Creek and seven on Friday.
Northern returns to action Jan. 11 at Southern Vance.
Parker, White shine for Lady Vikes in Lee County
The Northern Vance varsity girls basketball team finished 0-3 at the Lee County Invitational, losing 74-46 to Lee County Saturday.
Kechae Parker led Northern with 16 points and Tanaua White had 10.
Northern fell 62-54 to Southern Lee on Friday and started the event with an 81-42 defeat to Apex Thursday.
Parker led Northern with 25 points against Southern Lee and White had 20.
White led the Vikings against Apex with 28 points and Parker had 10.
Northern visits Southern Vance Jan. 11.
