Lady Raiders stay perfect in league play
Some coaches tell their players not to look at the scoreboard. Amy Simpson wants her Southern Vance team paying a little more attention to it.
Once Southern got in the foul bonus Friday against Franklinton, Simpson wanted her team to “melt the clock down and be smart.”
Southern (10-2, 4-0 Northern Carolina Conference) was in control throughout the 43-36 win, but couldn’t seem to bury the Red Rams (7-4, 3-2).
“I want to see more court awareness,” said Simpson. “Paying attention to the scoreboard instead of just playing the game. I just want to see our basketball level step up.”
The Raiders got the usual production out of senior Breona Jones, who finished with 21 points and six steals. Kechae Parker had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Franklinton got within four points early in the final period, but Jones answered for Southern with a layup and a feed inside to Rashyda Burwell for 2 points.
“Defensively, I think we struggled a little bit tonight,” said Simpson. “They had some key players on their team to knock down some big shots.”
Southern led 22-16 at halftime before taking a 33-26 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Southern has now won nine of its last 10 games. Both losses came to non-conference opponent Northern Nash.
The Raiders visit Warren County on Friday.
