Prep Roundup: Raiders hold off Bulldogs, 58-56

The Southern Vance varsity boys basketball team led most of the game Wednesday against the Bulldogs of Durham School of the Arts and held on for a 58-56 win.

Southern improved to 2-1 in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference and 5-6 overall.

Torian Henderson and Kean Branch each had 12 points for the Raiders and Ty-Traveon Roberts had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Henderson added six rebounds and Shawn Henderson tallied nine points, five steals, four assists, and three boards.

Southern girls net ninth league win

Breona Jones scored 18 points and dished out 10 assists Wednesday as Southern Vance toppled Durham School of the Arts 58-35.

Rashyda Burwell and Ayeisha Teasley each had seven points for the Raiders (9-2, 3-0 Northern Carolina Conference), who jumped out to a 30-12 halftime lead.

Southern is back in 2-A league action Friday, at home against Franklinton.

Northern’s Byrom named all-region

Northern Vance midfielder Jonathan Byrom was named to the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association All-Region 5 team for N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A schools.

Northern’s Big Eight Conference mate Chapel Hill led the way with five selections and Cardinal Gibbons, also of the Big Eight, had five.

Chapel Hill’s Ron Benson was the region and state coach of the year after guiding the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
