Big Eight names all-conference teams
The 3-A Big Eight Conference has released its all-conference selections for the fall with student-athletes from both Northern Vance and J.F. Webb earning recognition.
Northern and Webb began competing in the newly-formed league at the onset of the 2013 fall sports season alongside Cardinal Gibbons, Chapel Hill, Orange, Cedar Ridge, Northwood and Southern Durham.
Northern and Webb each had one football player honored. Linebacker Devin Anderson of Northern was named all-conference as an at-large defensive player and Webb’s Zack Watkins was selected as an all-conference offensive lineman.
Quarterback Kendall Hinton of state champion Southern Durham was named the league’s offensive player of the year and the Spartans’ Adrian Jones was coach of the year. J.D. Brooks of Orange was named the defensive player of the year.
Northern midfielders Joseph Sharpe and Jonathan Byrom each made the all-conference soccer squad. Goalkeeper Thomas Knight, defender Chris Pendergrass, midfielder Irving Cheluca, and defender Jake Wiggins were honorable mention selections for the Vikings.
Webb defender Tim Smith and midfielder Will Gillespie earned honorable mentions for Webb’s soccer team.
Chapel Hill swept the boys soccer honors. Ben Fisher was the player of the year, Justus Heizer was the top goalkeeper and Ron Benson took the coaching honors.
Hayley Marshburn and Caroline Joyner each earned all-conference honors for Webb in volleyball. Chapel Hill’s Perry Ramsey was player of the year and coaching honors went to Logan Barber of Cardinal Gibbons, which has won five consecutive 3-A state titles.
Webb earned the sportsmanship award in both boys cross country and girls tennis.
Northern’s Rachel Riddle earned all-conference honors in tennis and the Vikings’ Caroline Oakley was honorable mention.
