Southern teams open league play with wins, advance to tourney finals

The Southern Vance boys and girls basketball teams each will play for championships Saturday in the Don Amos Holiday Classic at Graham High School.

Each team also won Northern Carolina Conference openers against South Granville Friday.

The Southern boys knocked off South Granville 79-74 in triple overtime Friday and Johnny Hawkins’ 15 points led the team Thursday to a 72-54 win over River Mill Academy at Graham.

The Raiders (3-2) play in the final Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Southern led River Mill 39-25 at halftime and were up by as many as 25 points in the second half.

Ty-Traveon Roberts had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Southern, Al-Kabir Williams tallied nine points, Kean Branch had eight points, and Darius Kearney added six points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Raiders’ championship tilt at Graham is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Southern won 54-34 over South Granville, led by Breona Jones’ 18 points, nine steals and five assits. Kechae Parker had eight points and seven rebounds.

Southern (4-1) defeated Burlington Cummings 48-44 Thursday at the tourney, led by Rashyda Burwell’s 15 points. Jones and Kiyanna Kearney each had 11 points. Kearney added six rebounds and Jones had six assists. Parker finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
