Southern wins 10th straight, improves to 11-0 in conference
The wins keep piling up for Southern Vance. The Lady Raiders improved to 11-0 in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference Saturday, earning their 10th consecutive victory.
Freshman Ayeshia Teasley scored 13 points to lead Southern in the 59-38 win over N.C. School of Science and Math.
The Raiders (17-2) have a one-game lead on Bunn in the conference standings.
“I just want us to stay focused, keep working together as a team and just stay strong and finish it out,” said Southern head coach Amy Simpson.
Teasley was the only Raider to score in double figures Saturday, coming off the bench to knock down three 3-pointers in the third quarter.
“And the outside opens up the inside,” said Simpson. “So that always helps out.”
Eleven Raiders scored as Simpson was able to mix and match rotations, seeking to add depth as the regular season winds down.
The point guards, Breona Jones and Carrington Matias, each finished with eight points, Kechae Parker had seven and Jazsmine Thorpe and Rashyda Burwell each had six.
“I’m looking more to create depth and make sure we have confidence down the stretch,” said Simpson. “I want people to be active, to know their role when they go in and out of the game.”
Southern led 17-7 after one quarter before opening up a 36-15 halftime lead.
The Raiders host Warren County on Tuesday.
Simpson said the key in Southern’s win streak has been more about the mental approach rather than what’s happening on the court.
“Within the team, we have certain goals we want to keep,” said Simpson, “just firing each other up, staying supportive. If you get down, don’t dwell on it. Try to find another way to bounce back.”
