Kerr-Vance Academy opened its home varsity soccer season with a 10-0 win against Ridgecroft of Ahoskie on Tuesday.

After finishing the Greenfield Invitational Tournament with a 1-1-1 record, the Spartans defeated Ridgecroft with eight players scoring goals.

Lorenzo Ortiz continued his prolific streak with a goal less than 4 minutes in off of an assist from Jordan Hogge.

Ortiz added an unassisted goal later in the match that ended at the half.

Jordan Hogge scored two of his goals unassisted and one off of an assist from Sam Fuquay.

“There were times when we simply weren’t doing the things we are supposed to do,” said KVA head coach Devon Honeywell. “There should have been more combination plays. We need to work on the mental aspect of the game, whether the team we are playing is weaker or stronger than us.”

Honeywell credited the play of Juan Lopez and Drew Griggs.

“Juan did a wonderful job,” Honeywell said. “And I think Drew is one of the smartest players on the team. He may not be as athletic as some of his teammates, but his thinking of the game is way ahead of the others.”

Hogge and Ortiz each finished with two goals and an assist.

The other scorers were Griggs, Sam Fuquay, Joseph Burnette, Valentin Ortiz, Jordan Coghill, and Emil Bruce.

Griggs had two assists and Fuquay added an assist.

The Spartans return to action at The Epiphany School in New Bern on Friday.
