Southern hosts upset-minded Northeastern
Southern Vance hasn’t been wasting much time putting its opponents in early holes. The last two times out, the Lady Raiders have outscored the competition by a combined 47-3 in the opening quarter.
Fifth-seeded Southern followed a dominant win last Friday over Warren County by cruising to an 81-33 win Monday over No. 28 Newport Croatan (11-10) in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A playoffs.
Southern led Croatan 28-2 after one quarter, burying the Cougars by forcing turnovers and doing what the Raiders do best: run.
The Raiders (21-2) will look for another strong start tonight at home against No. 21 Elizabeth City Northeastern (9-11). The tip is set for 6 p.m.
Northeastern upset No. 12 East Duplin (18-8) 61-54 on Monday. The Eagles finished third in the Northeastern Coastal Conference behind Bertie (24-1) and Pasquotank (18-9). Bertie’s only loss is against Pasquotank and those two league rivals will clash again tonight in the second round.
The winner of Southern vs. Northeastern meets either No. 13 North Pitt (18-6) or No. 4 East Bladen (26-1) on Friday.
East Bladen defeated No. 29 Warren County (11-13) on Wednesday. East Bladen’s lone loss came against league rival Clinton (23-3), seeded 10th.
