Rebuilding Raiders fall 6-3 to Spartans
Kerr-Vance followed up a 7-2 loss on Thursday to crosstown rival Northern Vance with a 6-3 win over a rebuilding program from Southern Vance.
KVA, again playing short with five players, improved to 2-3 on the season while Southern Dropped to 0-3.
Neither Taylor Abbott, the Spartans’ No. 1 singles player — or William Parish, the No. 2 — conceded games to the Raiders. Abbott won in a close match on Thursday and Parish lost in a tight one.
“All my guys played well,” said KVA head coach Dave Donaldson. “My one and two came off of yesterday playing well and feeling strong.”
Donaldson coached at Southern for around 10 years. One of his players was Jameil Floyd, the Raiders’ new head coach.
Southern didn’t have a team last season and each one of Floyd’s players is new to the sport.
“Those kids need all the help they can get and he’s a good one to give it to them,” Donaldson said of Floyd.
The Raiders do have athletes. Most play other sports, like cross country or wrestling — programs that Floyd also leads.
One of the Raiders focused solely on tennis, Owen Dement, got a win on Friday. The freshman edged seventh-grader Zach Ellington.
“He’s grasped some of the techniques really quickly,” said Floyd. “He’s shown he can blossom into a good tennis player.”
Southern was swept in each of its first two matches, 2-A Northern Carolina Conference fixtures with N.C. School of Science and Math and Franklinton.
Floyd said the Raiders are just taking it one set at a time — and he’s seeing improvement.
“I’m impressed with my guys,” said Floyd. “They’ve only been playing tennis about three weeks. To be able to stay in matches with KVA was impressive.”
Both sides return to conference play on Monday. Southern is scheduled to visit Warren County while KVA welcomes Grace Christian of Raleigh.
