'She's a game-changer'

Goals were hard to come by in the first 40 minutes Friday at Crossroads Christian before Colts senior Caroline May hit a groove in the second half, scoring three times in 21 minutes.

May’s hat trick lifted Crossroads (1-1) to a 3-0 win over the visitors from St. Thomas More Academy of Raleigh. It was the Colts’ first victory after starting the season with a loss to Trinity Academy of Raleigh on Thursday.

May scored twice against Trinity in the 3-2 defeat.

“Once she kind of relaxes and gets in the right mindset, she finishes well,” said Crossroads head coach Joshua Bogle. “She’s a game-changer.”

May opened the scoring in the 55th minute, dribbling in on a breakaway and burying the finish in the upper netting.

About 12 minutes later, May settled a deflection and again got behind the defense for a break. She drove into the penalty area on the right and beat St. Thomas More goalkeeper Cara Garrison to the far post.

May capped the hat trick after receiving a pass from Shelby Jones in the middle of the park and then dribbled in for the strike.

“I just have to get those front four or five working together, not just kind of funning and running,” Bogle said of his attacking players.

Defensively, it was the first shutout for the Crossroads girls possibly in school history, Bogle said.

Bogle credited freshman Mackenzie Hudson with a strong shift at her defensive midfielder position and also liked what he saw from goalkeeper Morgan Meisnere.

“There weren’t a lot of shots on goal that she saved,” Bogle said of Meisnere. “But she was huge playing kind of a sweeper role almost on those through-balls that got loose — just kind of sweeping those up.”

The Colts aren’t seasoned and rely heavily on five eighth-graders, who also play on the middle school team — but Bogle likes the direction the team is headed.

“We’re looking really good this year,” he said.

The Colts visit Carolina Christian Conference opponent Neuse Christian on Monday.
