The Henderson/Vance Babe Ruth softball all-star teams got off to rough starts Tuesday in the Eastern N.C. State Tournament in Washington.

No pool play wins were registered by the Henderson/Vance squads as of press time. A score from the 16-and-under game between Henderson/Vance and Currituck Tuesday night was not available.

The Henderson/Vance 16-and-unders lost their first game against Cashie, 7-6. The Vance County all-stars had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t scratch a run.

Samantha Norwood sent a ball to the left side of the infield before Heather Satterwhite was thrown out at home on what head coach Mike Norwood deemed a questionable call.

“I thought we did real well,” said Mike Norwood. “I thought we played hard. Errors kind of cost us.”

Kelly Norwood pitched a complete game for Henderson/Vance. She was also 2-for-2 at the plate.

Breanna Sikes was 2-for-3 for Henderson/Vance and Kiana Alston and Annika Alicardi each had one hit.

The 16-and-unders are scheduled to face Nash Central Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

The Henderson/Vance 12-and-unders were shut out twice Tuesday, falling 2-0 to Down East and 12-0 to Pitt County.

“I’m putting it all on nerves right now,” said Jeff Harris, head coach of the Henderson/Vance team. “Every hit we got was straight back to the pitcher in the first game. We just weren’t swinging the bats good today.”

MacKenzie Pendergrass had two hits in the first game for Henderson/Vance and Olivia Moss added a hit in the second game.

The 12-and-unders are scheduled for two games Wednesday, at 4:30 p.m. against Laurinburg and at 8:30 p.m. against Winter Park.

Henderson/Vance’s 14-and-under squad lost its game against Down East Tuesday and faces Washington Wednesday at 8 a.m. and Pamlico at 8:30 p.m.

The 8-and-under Henderson/Vance team lost to Jamesville and Roanoke Valley Tuesday and plays Camden Wednesday at noon and Wayne County at 4:30 p.m.

The top three teams from each division advance to bracket play, which begins Thursday.
