Faulkner shooting for another title at Kerr Lake
Defending champion Steven Brame is not back in the field for this year’s Kerr Lake Country Club Invitational. But the guy that edged him in a recent playoff at the Henderson Country Club Invitational is.
Daniel Faulkner enters the Kerr Lake Invitational, set to begin Saturday, as one of the favorites. Faulkner withstood a second-day surge from Brame to win his third Henderson Invitational about two weeks ago.
Faulkner didn’t play in the 2012 event that Brame ran away with. Faulkner is seeking his first Kerr Lake title since 2010.
“It’s going to be very competitive,” said pro shop manager Michael Reese. “It always is.”
Reese said around 72 participants had entered as of Thursday, about the same number as last year.
“The Invitational is always a very important event for what club members play and our out of town guys that come play in it,” said Reese. “It’s very important to the club when you win the Invitational. It’s like winning the Masters in the pros.”
Reese said the course is in better shape than it has been in a while.
“We’ve got a lot more grass than we had last year,” said Reese. “The greens are in impeccable shape, rolling pretty good.”
This year’s tourney will also feature a two-flight senior division.
The first wave of golfers will tee off around 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast for both days.
