Denver’s Hamrick takes Kerr Lake tourney

Apr. 28, 2014 @ 06:26 PM

Scott Hamrick of Denver weighed a five-bass limit of 18 pounds, 6 ounces Saturday to win the second Walmart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament of the year on Kerr Lake.

Hamrick earned his second career BFL win, worth $4,889, by staying away from the lake’s prominent bushes.

“All the boats were crammed in the pockets fishing bushes,” Hamrick told FLW Outdoors. “They had pulled the water down a lot and there was barely 6 inches of water in the bushes. They were getting beat to death.

“So I backed out and fished a spinnerbait on rocks and bluffs and stuff like that. I knew it would be sunny, so my game plan was to get a limit and then flip some docks around places I knew and try to get two big bites.”

Cameron Newhouse of Manson took sixth with five bass weighing 15 pounds, 4 ounces.

Will White of Wake Forest won the co-angler division with five bass totaling 15 pounds, 15 ounces to claim $1,944.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on point standings qualify for the regional championship Oct. 2-4 on James River in Richmond, Va.

The Piedmont Division returns to Kerr Lake in August.
