Northern Vance cashed in on a Jonathan Byrom corner kick for the third time this season in Wednesday’s 3-A Big Eight Conference opener with Orange.

This one, finished by junior Robert Depo, broke a scoreless tie in the 56th minute and the Vikings held on for a 1-0 win to improve to 4-3-0 overall.

Last season, Northern and Orange battled for third place in the league with the Vikings winning both contests and taking the third spot.

“It’s always a great competition, a great game,” said Northern head coach Razvan Tegean. “We have some really physical games also against them.”

This one was no different. Possession was close to even and each team had its chances in the offensive third.

Orange came close to leveling in the 63rd minute when Trevor Samsa, around the right side of the 18-yard box, ripped a screamer that deflected off of the far side of the crossbar.

The Panthers had a couple of more chances in the final two minutes, but Northern junior goalkeeper Thomas Knight held on for the clean sheet in front of the inexperienced Vikings’ back line.

“One thing I like about them is they hustle really hard and they’re right there for each other,” Tegean said of his defenders, which include juniors Jake Wiggins and Chris Pendergrass, sophomore Eric Lemmond and freshman Brooks Falkner.

Northern earned the Byrom corner after Byrom sent a long, dangerous ball into the penalty area from midfield. The Orange keeper punched it out, setting up a corner from the left side. Byrom struck a line drive right at Depo, who got his left foot on it for the score.

Northern steps out of league action Friday for an away match at Franklinton.
