Local Roundup: Southern softball starts season with win
Kaylan Hoyle pitched a complete-game shutout and Southern Vance won its season opener over Franklinton Friday in dominant fashion, 14-0, in five innings.
Hoyle allowed two hits and struck out 13, adding to a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. She was one of five Raiders with multiple hits along with Kiyanna Kearney (2-for-3, triple), Brittany West (2-for-3, 2 doubles), Megan Hight (2-for-4), and Bree Simmons (2-for-4).
Mikayla Sellers and Harley Owen each added a hit for Southern.
The Raiders visit Person Tuesday.
Warriors begin regional play Friday
The J.F. Webb boys basketball team begins play in the 3-A Eastern Regional Friday at 8:30 p.m. against third-seeded Eastern Alamance (23-5).
Webb (24-5) clinched the regional berth at Fayetteville’s Crown Coliseum with Friday’s third-round 57-41 win at No. 1 Chapel Hill. The fourth-seeded Warriors defeated No. 13 Asheboro in the first round before a second-round win over No. 5 Southern Wayne.
The other half of the regional features No. 1 Rocky Mount (25-2) vs No. 3 West Craven (25-4). That matchup precedes Webb’s Friday at 7 p.m.
The winners meet Saturday at 6 p.m. for a chance to play in the state title game, which will be held Saturday, March 16 at N.C. State’s Reynolds Coliseum.
Warren County tennis doubles up KVA
Warren County scored a 6-3 season-opening win Friday over a shorthanded Kerr-Vance team.
