Isaiah Hicks’ 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks led J.F. Webb Monday by Asheboro, 82-47, in the opening round of the 3-A state playoffs.

No. 4 Webb (22-5) advanced to host No. 5 Southern Wayne (17-8) Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Eastern Carolina Conference Saints defeated No. 12 Mayodan McMichael 71-66 Monday.

Southern Wayne finished second in the Eastern Carolina Conference, three games behind Triton (23-3).

The Warriors used nine first-half 3-pointers, including six treys from point guard Devonte Williams, to build a 45-25 halftime lead on No. 13 Asheboro.

Webb coach Leo Brunelli said two of the Blue Comets’ best players from last season’s team that also lost in the first round at Webb graduated. The Warriors won 72-56 a year ago.

Brunelli wasn’t worried about a carryover effect from Friday’s loss to Chapel Hill in the Carolina Conference Tournament final.

“I knew Saturday coming into practice that they left that behind,” he said.

Williams finished with 19 points for Webb Monday and Tyrek Beverly and Stefan Cates each had 12. Bryan Smith added nine boards.
