Jones takes over, Lady Raiders win in Oxford
Breona Jones scored half of her game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter of Southern Vance’s 65-48 win at J.F. Webb Friday night. But it was the Raiders’ third quarter performance that turned the tide. Webb led 31-22 at halftime before being outscored 17-4 in the third.
“The second half we definitely did a whole lot better shooting free throws and looking to penetrate, playing our game, running the floor,” said Southern coach Amy Simpson.
“For some reason, we didn’t come back out in the second half with that killer instinct,” added Warrior coach Kenneth Rogers.
Jones either scored or assisted on Southern’s final 19 points of the game. She finished with seven assists to three turnovers and six steals.
“She’s an excellent basketball player,” said Rogers. “When she gets going, she’s hard to stop. Once she got going, that was it.”
Jones scored in a variety of ways, stepping back for 3-pointers as well as driving to the basket for lay-ins.
In the third quarter, Jones stole the ball on three consecutive Webb possessions, finishing at the other end with layups or free throws after being fouled. That stretch gave Webb the lead for good and put the Raiders up three points.
“I guess she was just feeling it,” said Simpson.
Rashyda Burwell added 14 points for Southern (18-5, 6-4), which ends the regular season in third place in the 3-A Carolina Conference. The Raiders will play at home in the league tourney on Monday.
Webb will also host a tourney game Monday. The Warriors were fourth in the standings, marking a return to the state playoffs after missing the postseason a year ago.
“It’s just a great feeling for our program to make another step back to the state playoffs,” said Rogers. “We feel like a mission has been accomplished and things are looking bright for the future. “
Webb honored seniors Janae Carroll, Laquasha Terry, Hattie Chavis, and Amber Bowden after the game.
