Fast start propels Northern to 5-2 win over Webb
Northern Vance scored three times in the opening seven minutes of Wednesday’s 5-2 Senior Night win over J.F. Webb.
The Vikings went up 4-0 and led 4-2 at halftime before adding another goal in the second half of the 3-A Big Eight Conference match.
Northern (5-13-3, 2-9-2) still has a game left Friday at Cedar Ridge and Webb (3-13-7, 1-12-1) is done for the season.
“I think they played well,” Northern head coach Razvan Tegean said of his team. “I really enjoyed the way they tried to move the ball and tried to get to the end of it. I think we played together.”
Irving Cheluca put Northern ahead 3-0 following a pair of own goals from Webb. Then Jonathan Byrom made it 4-0 on an assist from Lucas Hamrick.
“It just was a comedy of errors really,” said Webb head coach Sean Barnes. “That first start just kind of set the tone for the game. You can’t get down 4-0.”
Still, Webb fought its way back into the contest with goals from Zackaria Kassim and Zach Espino. Jamie Gomez had both assists as the Warriors trailed 4-2 entering the break.
“I told them at halftime you can’t let the team get back in the game, being relaxed,” said Tegean. “You have to keep up the tempo, keep up the hard work the whole time.”
Northern added the insurance goal in the 62nd minute when Hamrick intercepted a throw-in in Webb’s defensive third before knocking it to Byrom, who dribbled into the penalty area and beat goalkeeper Jacob Capps to his right for the score.
The Vikings honored four-year players Reed Kimbrell and Clayton Harris for Senior Night.
“They work so hard and wanted to be part of the program no matter what,” said Tegean. “I appreciate those kind of athletes, students. They don’t quit. They always try to work hard, push hard to help the team.”
Northern and Webb played to a 1-1 draw in their previous meeting. The Vikings will finish at least seventh in the league while Webb has last place locked up.
“The season didn’t work out how our standards are,” said Barnes. “It was just not what we anticipated at the beginning of the year.”
