Lady Eagles get first win of season over Northern
Warren County earned its first win of the season by avenging last week’s 44-39 loss at Northern Vance with a 54-38 win Tuesday at home over the injury-plagued Vikings.
Three of Northern’s players were out due to injury.
“Warren County played a great game. There’s no excuse on our part,” said Viking coach Randolph Crews. “We just have to do some more stuff in practice to get them ready. The second half we figured out that if we played better defense, we could be close.”
The Eagles outscored Northern (1-4) in every quarter but the fourth. Warren County led 27-14 at halftime.
Ten Eagles scored, led by Teja Kennerly’s 14 points.
“She set the tempo for us and we just kept it going,” said Warren County coach Shannon Jones.
“I think we did what we were supposed to do tonight as opposed to the last time we played them,” added Jones. “We played together, at a faster tempo and made a couple more shots. That’s what made the difference tonight.”
Whitley Fuller’s jumper put Warren County up 13-0 in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, eight different Eagles had scored.
Kechae Parker scored more than half of Northern’s points, finishing with 21. Tanaua White was also in double figures with 12.
“We’ve got one or two people out of position and then we’ve got some young people that have just never played before. Welcome to varsity basketball,” said Crews.
Northern hosts Franklinton Friday while Warren County visits Weldon Wednesday.
Jones said focus is the key for her Eagle team.
“More teamwork, working together,” she said. “I think that’s the biggest thing. When we start doing that, I think some things we’ll start to happen for us.”
