Lady Raiders stay perfect
Breona Jones was one steal shy of a double-double and Southern Vance cruised to a 61-43 win over Louisburg Friday night.
Jones had nine steals and six rebounds to go along with a game-high 21 points.
The Raiders improved their record to 4-0.
“Overall, I think we definitely have to work a lot harder on boxing out and rebounding,” said Southern coach Amy Simpson. “It definitely showed tonight.”
Southern led 15-6 after one quarter of play.
The Raiders closed the second quarter on a 15-3 run, capped by Kiyanna Kearney’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Louisburg outscored Southern 15-11 in the third quarter.
Back-to-back fast break buckets from Jones had the Raiders up 45-26 before Louisburg’s Bryana Roundtree hit a 3 as time expired.
“I usually tell them in practice to make sure to get the ball out unless somebody tries to stop you,” Simpson said of Southern’s up-tempo play. “Try to get the ball down the court fast as you can. Everybody else needs to fill the lane and run the floor.”
The Warriors never got closer than 15 in the final period of play.
“You have to be able to put these types of teams away because I think it builds confidence,” said Simpson.
Southern hosts East Chapel Hill on Wednesday before a rematch at Louisburg Friday.
“I’m expecting a better performance when we play them, but I’m also expecting better practices this week,” Simpson said.
