Southern softball at home Friday; Northern baseball headed to Western Alamance
The N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoff brackets were released Wednesday. The Southern Vance softball team begins the 3-A playoffs at home Friday and the Northern Vance baseball team is on the road.
Southern (14-5) earned a two-seed and hosts third-seeded Asheboro (7-11) of the Mid-Piedmont Conference Friday at 5 p.m. The winner faces either No. 2 Western Harnett (14-5) or No. 4 Burlington Williams (10-7) next week.
The Raiders finished second in the 3-A Carolina Conference behind Orange. Cardinal Gibbons got the three-seed and Chapel Hill claimed the final playoff spot.
Northern’s baseball team got the fourth seed out of the Carolina Conference for the second consecutive season and travels to Elon to face top-seeded Western Alamance (20-5) of the Mid-State Conference. The winner meets either No. 2 Triton (18-8) or No. 3 Southern Lee (20-6).
The Vikings were fourth in the league behind Orange, Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill, respectively.
In the 2-A softball bracket, Warren County (8-11) is the fifth-seed out of the Northern Carolina Conference and visits top-seeded Wilson Beddingfield (19-4) of the Eastern Plains Conference. Awaiting in the second round is No. 2 Granville Central (13-3) or No. 3 Pasquotank (8-6).
North Johnston enters the state playoffs as the Northern Carolina Conference’s top seed after a perfect 21-0 season. The Panthers were followed in the standings by Roanoke Rapids, Corinth Holders, Bunn, and Warren County.
