Northern Vance quieted a Southern Vance rally Wednesday and pulled away for a 64-49 win.

Northern jumped out to a 21-4 lead after one quarter before Southern got within five points by halftime.

The Raiders, playing in their first game of the season, trimmed the lead to 43-42 with 5:38 to play in the game.

Tavin Moore led the host Vikings (2-1) down the stretch and finished with 22 points.

Moore sat out much of the second and third quarters with foul trouble after netting 10 points in the opening period.

Moore’s 3-pointer with 3:38 to play pushed Northern’s lead to 49-42 and the senior guard put an exclamation point on the win with a breakaway slam before the buzzer.

Malik Williams added 12 points off the bench for Northern and Erobywin Lewis contributed 10 points off the bench including a trio of valuable second-half tip-ins.

Ty-Traveon Roberts was the only Raider in double-figure scoring with 24 points.

The crosstown rivals combined for 51 turnovers on the night.

Northern shot 3-of-17 from the outside and Southern finished 2-of-18.

Northern, which got a win over Rockingham County last week, is back in action Friday at home against Warren County and Southern hosts Northern Nash Friday.
