Raider rally falls short against Unicorns

Southern Vance rallied to even the score after trailing 5-0 Wednesday, but couldn’t complete the comeback against N.C. School of Science and Math.

The 8-5 loss dropped Southern to 0-4 in 2-A Northern Carolina Conference play.

NCSSM scored each of its runs in the first and sixth innings. The Unicorns jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first and added the final three runs in the sixth.

“They play hard — they really do,” Southern assistant coach Jonathan Oakley said of his team. “We’re just missing that one link to get everything in order that we need to.”

Matthew Perkins got the start for the Raiders.

“Matthew pitched a very good game,” said Oakley. “We had a couple of errors in the first inning that let them get those five runs. Then after that, he pitched well — all the way through the fifth inning.”

Oakley said getting one league win — just getting over the hump — could create a shift in momentum for Southern, which hosts Durham School of the Arts on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

“These kids have the talent,” he said. “I think they need self confidence. I think once we get the first win out of the way, it’s going to be downhill from there.”
