Prep Roundup: Spartans fall to Parrott in soccer

Sep. 15, 2013 @ 05:24 PM

The Kerr-Vance varsity soccer team fought for most of the match only to give up two late goals in a 3-0 loss to Arendell-Parrott Academy Friday evening.

The first half proved to be a defensive struggle with both teams unable to garner much offense.

Finally, with just under seven minutes left in the half, Parrott found the back of the net. An initial shot was tipped by KVA as goalie Jordan Smith went for the stop. The tipped shot careened to the far side of the goal where a Parrott player knocked it in.

The first half ended with the Patriots leading the Spartans 1-0.

KVA head coach Devon Honeywell praised the play of the Spartans, citing a much improved effort from a 6-1 loss to Parrott earlier in the season.

“In my opinion tonight’s game was one of our better games in terms of playing to the team tactics,” Honeywell said. “We contained them for most the game.”

The first 30 minutes of the second half also proved a defensive struggle. With just over 10 minutes left in the game, Parrott added a second goal from a header off a free kick. The Patriots scored again just over two minutes later on a penalty kick after a hand ball in front of the Spartan goal.

“We just made some simple errors late in the game,” Honeywell said. “They have a lot of seniors who have been playing varsity for quite a while.  For a young team, we really held them at bay for most of the game.”

Honeywell praised the play of Caleb Weiss, James Averette, Colin Pegram and goalie Jordan Smith.

“It’s another tough loss, but we are getting better as the season progresses,” Honeywell said. “We had better communication skills and really showed a lot of heart tonight.”
