Spartans advance to quarterfinals with 7-2 win over Lawrence Academy
Kerr-Vance clinched a spot in the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association 1-A state tournament quarterfinals Tuesday with a 7-2 win over Lawrence Academy.
The third-seeded Spartans will face either No. 2 Wayne Country Day (16-2) or No. 7 Greenfield (8-6) Friday at Barton College in Wilson. The semifinals and championship will be held there Saturday.
KVA (14-7) lost the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles match Tuesday against No. 6 Lawrence (10-13).
“I told them we’re going to have to play a little bit better,” said Spartans’ head coach Hilda Delbridge. “We’re going to have to play a little bit better to do well in that next round.”
KVA’s Cassidy Tucker and Claire Freeman each pulled out competitive matches against the visitors from Merry Hill.
Freeman held off Alyssa Byrum 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) in their No. 3 singles match.
“The girl was really running her, corner to corner,” Delbridge said of Byrum. “Claire settled down, kept the ball in play up the middle, got control of the match and went ahead and won the first set.”
The Spartans finished tied for fourth in the mixed-classification Eastern Plains Independent Conference.
Delbridge said KVA’s experience puts the Spartans in good position to do well in Wilson. Tucker, Price Wester and Maggie Thompson are each seniors.
“I told them today anything else is icing on the cake,” said Delbridge. “We wanted to win half of our matches. We did. We wanted to finish third and finished tied for fourth, but got a No. 3 seed in the state playoffs. So we just need to step it up and play well and do our best.”
