KVA knocks off Northern 8-1 at Fox Pond
Kerr-Vance improved to 2-0 Tuesday with an 8-1 win over crosstown rival Northern Vance.
KVA head coach Hilda Delbridge said there was a good crowd on hand at Fox Pond Park. The match was added to the schedule just last week. The two sides will meet again Sept. 7 at KVA’s Burger King Classic.
“It generates a lot of excitement,” Delbridge said of the matchup with Northern. “I think it’s great.”
Price Wester, Claire Freeman, Macy Lee Johnson, Betsy Murphy, and Maggie Thompson each earned singles wins for KVA.
“I’m real pleased,” Delbridge said of her team. “There’s a lot of talent, a lot of skill and a lot of enthusiasm.”
Northern was playing its opening contest of the season.
“We were missing a couple of girls, but I thought we had a great effort,” said Northern head coach Jeff Arthurs. “We’ve gotten so much better since we’ve started practice. There are a lot of areas for improvement, but overall it was a very good start.”
Rachel Riddle earned Northern’s lone win, besting Cassidy Tucker in No. 1 singles action 6-4, 6-2.
“Rachel played very well,” Arthurs said of the senior. “She’s much improved. She’s serving much better than last year. She played very well.”
Not quite knowing what the Eastern Plains Independent Conference has in store, Delbridge, in her first season as the Spartans’ varsity coach, is reserving judgment on what kind of season the Spartans can have.
KVA hosts Trinity of Raleigh Thursday at 4 p.m. while Northern turns its focus to a different rivalry bout. The Vikings are back at Fox Pond today at 4:30 p.m. in a match against Southern Vance.
