Victory Christian bounced back from a loss to close out the South Granville Holiday Invitational last week with a 65-22 win Friday over Cornerstone Christian.

Eagle coach Bill Hissong said he was more impressed with his team’s effort in the defeat to Wake Christian in Creedmoor than in Friday’s league-opening win.

“We came in overconfident. We looked at those kids and said we should beat them by 100,” said Hissong. “We made passes we wouldn’t normally make. We tried to drive when we shouldn’t drive. We just did not play good fundamental basketball.”

Victory led 19-5 after one quarter of play and 33-9 at halftime.

Jeremy Florence, fresh off his all-tournament team performance at South Granville, led the Eagles with 13 points. Austin West and Christian Bowes both had 11.

Victory improved to 6-3 on the season.

Cornerstone, of Roanoke Rapids, had only six players in uniform.

“We thought we were just going to come in here and do what we wanted to,” Hissong said. “And those kids played hard. And we didn’t.”

Victory hosts Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School on Tuesday in non-conference action before returning to league play Friday at home against Heritage Christian of Zebulon.

Hissong said he expects Heritage and Norlina Christian, along with the Eagles, to contend for the top spot in the conference.
