Former Northern Vance star Carlos Fields led Winston-Salem State Saturday with 10 tackles and the Rams advanced to their third consecutive CIAA Championship Game with a 28-14 win over Fayetteville State (6-4) to secure the Southern Division title.

Winston-Salem State (9-1), ranked ninth in Division II, looks for its third straight league title Saturday when it hosts No. 22 Virginia State at 1 p.m.

Fields, a senior linebacker, is the reigning CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and was named preseason first team Division II All-America by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview.

The 2009 Northern graduate currently leads the Rams in total tackles.

Fields and teammate Tehvyn Brantley each celebrated Senior Night on Saturday. Brantley, a starting receiver, played at Northern before finishing high school at Mount Zion Christian Academy.

Winston-Salem State has made two consecutive appearances in the Division II national semifinals and the Rams fell to Valdosta State in the title game last season.

The Rams have won nine straight since dropping their season opener in a nationally-televised game at UNC Pembroke.
