Win slips away from Northern in 39-34 loss at Cedar Ridge
Victory was within reach for Northern Vance Monday at Cedar Ridge.
The Vikings steadily moved the ball all night and marched close to the Red Wolves’ red zone in the game’s final minute.
But on 4th and 6 from the Cedar Ridge 25-yard line, Northern quarterback Kris Haywood ran out of bounds about 2 yards shy of the first down, giving the home team possession with 36 seconds to play.
Cedar Ridge (2-8, 2-4) went into victory formation and handed Northern a 39-34 loss, the Vikings’ 20th consecutive defeat.
Monday’s 3-A Big Eight Conference game was moved from last Friday because of the threat of severe weather.
The Vikings (0-10, 0-6), now owners of the third-longest losing streak in the state, have one more chance this season for a win, at home against J.F. Webb Friday.
“I’ve been losing since my freshman year,” said Northern senior linebacker and running back Devin Anderson. “That’s tough. It’s tough losing week after week, year after year. This is my senior year. Last two games, last away game. It was close. It slipped away from my hands.”
Cedar Ridge got the go-ahead score with 4:23 left when quarterback Peyton Pappas hit Marquez Hunter for a 9-yard touchdown before the extra point made it 39-34.
A 30-yard kick return from Tyrrick Bullock gave Northern possession at the 50 before steady doses of rushes.
A scrambling Haywood ran out of bounds with two oncoming Red Wolves defenders approaching.
“Just wanted to hit our tight end on a waggle,” Northern head coach Eric Watkins said of the play call. “He wasn’t there so Kris felt like he could get the first down.”
Northern’s Tamaj Bullock rushed for 194 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns.
Haywood found Michael Spinner for a 27-yard touchdown, Tyrrick Bullock scored from 18 yards out and Haywood found the end zone on a short keeper.
“They’re hurt tonight,” said Watkins. “But they’ll be back focused in the film room tomorrow getting ready for Webb. I think a lot of positives are going to come out of this game. They tasted it and I think they want to finish it off Friday.”
Northern was whistled for five personal fouls, four of which came with the game still up for grabs. The fouls weren't egregious. Two were late hits on the quarterback, one was a facemask and the other was a helmet-to-helmet personal fouled called on Anderson, who laid a huge hit on Walton after a first down grab around midield. The foul put Cedar Ridge at Northern's 37 and the Red Wolves scored four plays later.
“It seemed like every time we scored, we turn around and go on defense and we get a penalty to keep their drive and momentum going," said Watkins, who felt some of the calls were unfair. "That was really a change in the game.”
