Southern opens season with dominant win over Northern
Rashyda Burwell led Southern Vance with 20 points, Breona Jones had 15 and the Raiders held Northern Vance scoreless in the third quarter on their way to a 70-16 win Wednesday to start the season.
Southern forced 26 turnovers and held host Northern to less than 10 percent shooting from the field.
The Raiders led 53-10 at halftime.
“I want to be able to put away teams but at the same time I want to be able to put teams away and progress each time,” said Southern head coach Amy Simpson.
Northern head coach Randolph Crews liked the shots his team was getting. The Vikings just couldn’t knock them down. And when they missed, it didn’t take long for Southern’s speedsters to finish at the other end.
“You had good high percentage shots and we don’t get the rebound. And they’re gone,” said Crews. “That’s just what they do. That’s what they’re known for.”
Jones has been known as the best girls player in the area, maybe since she was a freshman. The senior lived up to that billing Wednesday, adding eight assists and five steals to her point total.
Jones’ backup, freshman Carrington Matias, added nine points to lead the bench scoring and the two point guards also saw some minutes on the floor together.
Nine Raiders scored as Simpson used subs with regularity.
Brittany West came off the bench to lead the Raiders with seven rebounds.
“They have to be one of the best teams in 2-A or 3-A,” said Crews. “The majority of our team is sophomores and freshmen. I told them in the locker room that I’m so proud to be their coach. But they’re young. It’s going to take some maturation time.”
Simpson expects a tough test Friday as the Raiders host Northern Nash.
