Northern Vance trailed Southeast Halifax by 10 points with about five minutes to play Friday night, but the Vikings clawed their way back into the game and forced overtime with a three-point play from Kechae Parker.

Southeast outscored Northern 13-6 in the overtime period for a 62-55 win.

“One more rebound, one more defensive stop and we had them,” said Northern coach Randolph Crews.

The Vikings (1-7) were within four points with 1:50 to go in overtime, but the Trojans pulled away at the free throw line.

Down 49-46 in regulation, Northern had the ball on the baseline with 2.3 seconds remaining when Tanaua White found Parker under the basket. Parker pump-faked, drew contact and knocked down the layup.

“I knew when she went to the free throw line she was going to make it,” said Crews.

Parker did just that with 1.2 seconds on the clock. A desperation heave from Southeast at the buzzer wasn’t close.

“We went to a full-court, half-court, kind of a junk defense that would make them say I can’t make the next pass, let me shoot this jumper,” Crews said of the fourth-quarter comeback. “(Southeast) fell into what we were trying to get accomplished.”

White led Northern with 24 points. Nine of those came in the fourth.

“Tanaua can take over a game offensively and she did that for us today,” said Crews.

Northern returns to action Dec. 27 in the three-day Lee County Invitational.
