The Kerr-Vance varsity lacrosse team overwhelmed Wesleyan Christian Academy on Monday, 16-4.

KVA jumped to an early lead, scoring six goals in the first period with Wesleyan scoring once. The Spartans scored three more times in the second period, but gave up two goals with a 9-3 halftime lead.

“I was very proud of our effort today,” said Spartans head coach Scott Burnette. “I could name 20 guys who played well today, but I’m really thrilled with the effort that Emil Bruce gave. He won the most ground balls in addition to scoring two goals and assisting on another.”

Sam Fuquay led KVA in scoring with five goals and an assist.

Colin Pegram added four goals and assisted on six others.

Also scoring for the Spartans were Emil Bruce with two goals and John Carr, Max Perry, Gabriel Carr, Joseph Everette, and James Averette each adding one goal.

Bruce, Gabriel Carr and Perry also had one assist each.

“We got a lot of good play from our young guys,” said Burnette, who substituted freely throughout the game. “And I was especially fired up that James Averette got a big goal today.”

Averette normally plays defense, but took several runs at midfield during the match.

Burnette highlighted the play of goalie Jordan Smith, who had 11 saves during the game.

“He’s just been a stud for us all year,” Burnette said.

The Spartans return to action at home Wednesday against Roxboro Community School.
