Bad shooting night dooms Southern

Southern Vance had a rough go of it in Tuesday’s 67-39 loss to Cardinal Gibbons on the Raiders’ Senior Night.

Southern connected on just one 3-pointer and that one came in the game’s closing minutes.

“I’d say this is probably the worst shooting night we had all season. I think we were right there at it,” said Raider coach Torrey Nowell.

Gibbons improved to 5-3 in 3-A Carolina Conference play while Southern dropped to 1-8.

Eleven different Crusaders scored and three were in double digits, led by Patrick Domville’s game-high 13 points.

Gibbons led by two after the first quarter before outscoring Southern 23-7 in the second quarter and 15-7 in the third to take a 52-26 into the fourth.

“They’re a team,” said Nowell. “They’re a good team. Great fundamentals and they’re coached very well.”

The Crusaders held Southern’s leading scorer Ty-Traveon Roberts to four points, all scored in the second half.

Jamal Williams and Cameron Evans, both seniors, each had 10 points for the Raiders.

Williams and Evans are joined in the senior class by Jahun Ricks, De’Vante Henderson, Reggie Hunter, and Jamarcus Perry.

“Great senior class,” said Nowell. “I had a great time working with those young men. Hopefully some of the things I’ve said to them stick with them for the rest of their lives.”

“This whole thing is not about wins,” Nowell told his team at a recent practice. “It’s a lifelong commitment to discipline and doing the right things.”

Southern closes the regular season Friday at J.F. Webb.

“Of course you know nobody can stop Isaiah (Hicks) really,” said Nowell. “You just have to work on stopping everybody else on the team, minimizing our turnovers. We just have to be a smarter team.”
