Bunn ducks Currin, beats KVA 54-24

Kerr-Vance coach Rick Frampton was looking Thursday to get wrestlers like Daniel Currin, 34-7 on the season, another run out before the state tournament next week.

Currin will have to hit the mat with his coach instead. Bunn’s coach avoided Currin so one of his wrestlers could get a forfeit win and improve his seeding for the 2-A regionals.

The Wildcats won the meet, 54-24, taking two of the three contested matches.

“It’s called respect,” Frampton told Currin. “He respects you enough he doesn’t want his kid to wrestle you. Be happy about it, don’t be upset.”

“So now Daniel will have to wrestle with me,” Frampton quipped. “We’ll just go into practice hard (Friday) and practice next week.”

Jared Hicks got KVA’s win, outlasting Alston Smith with a pin in overtime at 122 pounds.

Hicks trailed 6-2 after the first period and 8-2 early in the second.

“Jared’s weapon is his gas tank,” said Frampton. “He has great conditioning. Jared’s improving a lot. He has a lot of potential as a wrestler. He’s learning to weather the storm in the beginning and wear them down.”

KVA’s Caleb Weiss, a first-year wrestler, was pinned in the third round of his match at 115 pounds.

“Caleb has had some really good hard matches in the past three weeks,” said Frampton. “He really has done a good job.”

Frampton was most pleased with his eighth-grade heavyweight, James Green, who was pinned by one of the top-ranked wrestlers in NCHSAA 2-A.

“I looked at him and said, ‘Do you want to wrestle?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, coach I’ll go and give it my best,’” said Frampton. “You can’t say more than that. That’s just great.”

The NCISAA state tourney is next Friday and Saturday at Christ School near Asheville.
