Back in the hunt: Northern dominant in 63-42 win over Southern

Northern Vance played like a different team Friday night against crosstown rival Southern Vance than the one that lost by a point at Raider Gymnasium Jan. 11. The Vikings dominated the second round against Southern from start to finish, never trailing in a 63-42 win.

Northern notched its first 3-A Carolina Conference win of the season, putting the Vikings back in the hunt for the state playoffs.

“I think we’re back in it for real,” said Northern coach Wilton Baskett.

The Vikings and Raiders are now both 1-4 in league play.

“We’ve been playing better, but just couldn’t seem to get over that proverbial hump so to speak,” said Baskett. “We had an opportunity to beat Southern the first time we played them, had every opportunity to beat Cardinal Gibbons, had an opportunity to beat Orange. It was nice to get over that hump and finally seal the deal.”

Northern came out hot, led by nine first quarter points from Le’Darius Brandon, who finished with 14 points. Jaleel Seward had 10 first half points for the Vikes and finished with 16.

“Between Le’Darius hitting the long ones and Jaleel hitting the layups, it gave us a little breathing room,” said Baskett.

Ty-Traveon Roberts had a game-high 19 points for Southern, including five 3-pointers.

Northern led 27-23 at halftime.

A Montel Clark bucket inside followed by a banked-in Kris Haywood 3-pointer put the Vikings up 42-28 with 2:04 to play in the third. Clark finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Baskett said he was pleased with some tweaking to his 1-3-1 zone defense.

Northern shot 18-of-27 at the free throw line. Southern was 7-of-17.

“We did exactly what we expected to do,” said Baskett. “Tonight we played more like we are capable of playing.”

Northern hosts J.F. Webb Tuesday while Southern entertains Chapel Hill.
