Lady Raiders rebound with 60-36 win
Southern Vance responded to its first loss of the season Wednesday at Greensboro Smith with a 60-36 win at home over Warren County Friday night.
Southern improved to 8-1 overall while Warren County dropped to 1-6.
“We had a pretty good practice (Thursday),” said Southern coach Amy Simpson. “Everybody seemed like they had fun. They were into it. I like how they responded.”
Breona Jones led the Raiders with 16 points and seven steals. Carslin Talley finished with 10 points and Moesha Sneed added 11 points off the bench.
“She stepped up big, big points for us down the stretch,” Simpson said of Sneed. “I feel like her confidence is building up even though this is only her sophomore year. That’s pretty impressive.”
Southern turned a 15-8 first quarter lead into a 31-19 halftime advantage.
Dominique Solomon led Warren County with 15 points.
“I just think they outhustled us on both ends of the court,” said Warren County coach Shannon Jones. “Southern is a great team, they play together. They hustle hard and they rally when they’re down. We just didn’t meet the challenge today.”
Sneed sank a 3-pointer in the opening minute of the second half.
Jones added a triple of her own with 4:20 to go in the third before assisting Talley on a layup.
“When you don’t move your feet, it’s tough to defend anybody,” Shannon Jones said of defending Breona Jones, the Raiders’ point guard.
“She’s a great player, I’m not taking anything away from her, but we have defensive players who can stay with her, just chose not to.”
Warren County hosts Louisburg Friday while Southern heads to Franklinton Wednesday for a non-conference match.
