Local Roundup: Lady Spartans edged by Calvary, 42-41
The Kerr-Vance varsity girls basketball team lost 42-41 to unbeaten Calvary Baptist Friday night.
The Spartans rallied from an eight-point fourth quarter deficit to tie the game, but Calvary sealed the win on a free throw with nine seconds left.
“It was a great, hard-fought battle, a great game to watch,” said KVA coach Brian Russell. “It’s the kind of loss that will really help us get better in the long run.”
Rachel Ross led KVA with 16 points and Rebecca Ross had nine.
KVA was up 21-14 at halftime, but gave up 21 third quarter points.
The Spartans will host Crossroads Christian in the Chick-Fil-A Holiday Hoops Invitational Friday.
KVA boys drop first game of season
Kerr-Vance was handed its first loss of the season in varsity boys action, 73-37, Friday night against Calvary Baptist of Winston-Salem.
Calvary is the fourth-ranked team in NCISAA 2-A.
“They played great, they took us out of what we wanted to do offensively,” said Spartan coach Dave Carrier. “They caused a lot of turnovers and turned them into points.”
Brandon Dickerson led KVA with 10 points.
The Spartans’ next match is Friday against Crossroads Christian in the Chick-Fil-A Holiday Hoops Invitational.
