Lady Colts taking steps in right direction

First-year Crossroads Christian coach Dana LaBerge said his varsity girls have a long way to go, but are showing improvement.
The Colts scored their third win of the season Tuesday in a 43-24 non-conference victory over Lighthouse Christian.
“We’re taking steps,” said LaBerge. “We started out pretty slow, but these last few games, we’re really starting to come together.”
Crossroads led 30-12 entering the fourth quarter before the Eagles scored the first four points of the period and forced a Colts timeout with their defensive pressure.
Jessi Hayes hit Lizzy Long for a score out of the timeout and Crossroads went on an a 9-2 run.
“Just told them, ‘Calm down. It’s coming. We’ve got a press-breaker. We know how to do it,’” said LaBerge. “‘We’ve done it over and over. So just run the play. Don’t get caught up in all the hype.’ And they responded and took care of business.”
The Colts outscored the Eagles 12-5 in the third quarter, led by Hayes’ six points. She finished with a game-high 16.
Crossroads led 18-7 at halftime.
“First half was just sloppy,” LaBerge said. “The second half they really buckled down on defense, we got some steals and our post players really started finishing under the basket, which really helped out a lot.”
One of those post players was junior Caroline May, who tallied eight points.
“She’s getting to be a go-to player down there. She just has energy the whole game,” said LaBerge.
LaBerge added that he’s optimistic about getting back into conference play. Crossroads travels to Community Christian on Friday.
“Some of those teams we’ll be playing pretty soon are right about the same level we are,” he said. “I think if we keep taking those steps, we’re going to get some wins.”
