Local roundup: Viking tennis scores sweep over Orange

Northern Vance-Orange matchups are usually a battle for third place in the 3-A Carolina Conference. And they’re usually close.

The Vikings dominated the first meeting of the season with the Panthers Thursday, scoring a sweep. Northern coach Jeff Arthurs said it was the best his team has played this season.

Northern improved to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in league play. The Vikings visit Chapel Hill Monday.

Northern soccer bounces back with win over Southern Durham

Northern Vance bounced back from two defeats earlier in the week with a 3-1 non-conference win over Southern Durham Thursday.

Kristin Long scored twice on penalty kicks and Ashlyn Reams added another goal, assisted by Stephanie Garcia.

“We looked pretty good,” said Northern coach Razvan Tegean. “It was completely different than the last two games.”

The Vikings led 1-0 at halftime before Reams’ strike made it 2-0. Long added the second penalty in the 75th minute.

“We played really well,” said Tegean. “I think our effort was so much better than last night.”

Northern (3-6-2) is at home against Orange Monday at 6:30 p.m.

KVA wins golf meet against local rivals

Kerr-Vance shot 319 to win Thursday’s match at Henderson Country Club against J.F. Webb and Northern and Southern Vance.

Playing in the best weather so far this season, Spartan coach Dave Carrier said it was the best his team has played.

“I’m proud of them,” said Carrier. “We keep getting a little better each day. It was fun to have all the local teams out there.”

Daniel Burnette led KVA with a 75, followed by Joseph Burnette’s 78, Brandon Dickerson’s 81 and Jake Ruggles’ 85. Reid Bridges shot 92 and Morgan Watkins shot 94.

Taylor Cook was the top scorer for Webb with 90.

Spartans thump Cary Christian, 17-1

The Kerr-Vance varsity baseball team picked up a 17-1, five-inning win over Cary Christian earlier this week.

Freshman Daniel Wilkerson started and threw four innings, allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts before Adam Medlin came on to close the game out.

Medlin and Wilkerson each had two hits. Dustin Smith, Wyatt Evans and Lane Humphries also had base hits.

Spartan soccer earns draw

Kerr-Vance played to its fifth scoreless draw of the season Thursday night against Grace Christian of Raleigh.

KVA coach Amy Johnson said the defense was boosted by Meredith Freeman’s return from injury along with stellar play from Rebecca Ross,

Cassidy Dickerson and Price Wester. The Spartans are away at Halifax Academy Tuesday.

The Kerr-Vance tennis team fell 7-2 to Grace Christian of Raleigh Thursday.

HMS tops Bunn 1-0

The Henderson Middle School soccer team defeated Bunn 1-0 Wednesday.

Maleny Lopez was the goal scorer for HMS and Mya Cozart had the clean sheet, stopping several shots including a penalty kick.
