D.J. Matthews followed Monday’s 91 with a 78 Tuesday for Crossroads Christian to finish sixth at the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association 1-A state tournament in Pinehurst.

“He played great,” said Crossroads coach Aaron Hale. “He played some good golf.”

An Elon School golfer took the individual title and Elon School easily won the team competition at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club with a two-day total of 644, besting the second-place team by 133 shots.

The Crossroads foursome of Matthews, Griffin Martin, Noah Carlson, and Will Nutt was fourth with a 797, finishing behind Hickory Christian Academy and Northwood Temple Academy. The Colts followed Monday’s 419 with a 378 Tuesday.

Crossroads edged Shannon Forest Christian School, the second-ranked team entering the tourney, by a stroke.

The Colts feature two ninth-graders and an eighth-grader.

“This was a great experience for them,” said Hale. “Next time we get in a position like this, it won’t be new to them.”
