Crowns at stake in Saturday's state track meet
Titles are on the line Saturday in Greensboro at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state track and field meet.
Northern and Southern Vance as well as J.F. Webb each have representatives at the meet, held at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of N.C. A&T. Action in the field events begins at 10 a.m. and running events are slated for 11 a.m.
Northern’s 4x200-meter boys team qualified along with Tyrrick Bullock in the 100 meters and Montel Clark in the shot put last week at the Mideast Regional in Burlington.
Northern’s relay team of Bullock, Jaleel Seward, Devin Anderson, and Vincent Ragland finished fourth with a time of 1:31.37. Winterville South Central boasts the top time in the state this year at 1:28.58.
Tyrrick Bullock was fourth in the 100 with a mark of 11.22 seconds. He’ll have to compete against the likes of NCHSAA Male Athlete of the Year T.J. Logan of Northern Guilford. Logan, a North Carolina football recruit, shares the state’s top time with Jacksonville’s Tyshawn Siders at 10.64.
Clark will compete in the shot put along with Southern Vance’s Jaquez Bullock. Clark was fourth in the shot put at regionals with a throw of 45 feet, 3 inches, behind Bullock in third with a toss of 46 feet, 2.5 inches. China Grove Carson’s Myquon Stout has a throw of 58 feet, 9 inches this season.
Webb’s Precious Battle, Shontiara Williams, Cora Puryear, and Raineisha Taylor will compete in the girls 4x100 race. Webb’s time of 51.99 was good enough for third in Burlington. The state’s top time this season belongs to Berry Academy at 49.74.
Berry Academy won the 3-A men’s team title last year while North Buncombe was the girls champion.
