Northern, Webb athletes net postseason acclaim

Athletes from Northern Vance and J.F. Webb received recognition in the 3-A Big Eight Conference postseason awards.

Northern’s Tavin Moore and Webb’s Stefan Cates and Tyrek Beverly each are on the boys all-conference basketball team. Cates, a senior guard, was also selected to the District 6 third team.

The Big Eight boys player of the year is Keegan Crabtree of league champion Orange and Greg Motley of Orange is the coach of the year. Motley also earned top coaching honors for District 6.

Kenya Perry and Jackie Miller represent the Northern girls on the all-conference squad along with Starr Jones of Webb.

Chapel Hill’s Catherine Romaine is player of the year and Sherry Norris is coach of the year after guiding the state champion Tigers to a perfect league season. Norris is also the girls coach of the year for District 6.

Orange swept the league’s top wrestling honors.

Northern’s Colbey Hobgood (106 pounds), Joel Royster (120), Justin Care (at-large), and Mykel Williams (at-large) earned all-conference honors in their weight category along with Justin Perry (113) of Webb.

Pair of Raider wrestlers honored

A pair of Southern Vance wrestlers earned 2-A Northern Carolina Conference wrestling honors in their weight category.

Damonte Blash, at 126 pounds, and Kavoris Perry, at 152, received all-league distinction.

Blash went on to finish fourth at the state championships in Greensboro.
