Southern boys slip by Northern 44-43

Jan. 12, 2013 @ 01:05 AM

Cameron Evans sank the go-ahead free throw with six seconds on the clock and Southern Vance edged Northern 44-43 in another classic edition of the crosstown rivalry.

Northern’s Dy’Quan Marrow split at the line with 13 seconds left to tie the game at 43 before Evans was fouled driving to the bucket to earn two shots. A lane violation was called on Evans’ second attempt.

Viking freshman point guard Kris Haywood took the inbounds pass and pushed the ball up the court before getting stuck in traffic near the top of the key. The ball fell to Le’Darius Brandon, who knocked down a shot from 3-point range  — but the buzzer had already sounded, giving Southern the win in a rowdy Raider Gymnasium.

Northern entered the fourth quarter down 35-26, but outscored the home team 17-9 in the final period.
The Vikings led 19-18 at halftime, but Southern started the third quarter on a 13-2 run.

Ty-Traveon Roberts led the Raiders with 13 points and Le’Darius Brandon had 12 for the Vikes.

It was the 3-A Carolina Conference opener for both teams. The Raiders return to league action Friday at Chapel Hill while Northern visits J.F. Webb.

See Sunday’s print edition for more on Friday’s game.
