Local Roundup: Warriors knocked off by Word of God

J.F. Webb was defeated 70-57 by Word of God Friday at the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Hoops Invitational at Broughton High School in Raleigh, according to reports from HighSchoolOT.

It was the Warriors’ second defeat of the season.

Word of God advanced to face New Hampton, N.H. in the championship game of the Shavlik Randolph Bracket. Webb will meet High Point Christian Saturday at 2:20 p.m. in the third-place game.

Isaiah Hicks and Mitron Terry scored 45 of Webb’s 57 points. Hicks had 24 points and nine rebounds and Terry finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Word of God was led by Tyrek Coger’s 23 points. Jordan Whitfield had 17 and Josh Newkirk finished with 12.

Webb trailed 57-52 with 3:21 left in the game and was down 30-27 at halftime.

Southern boys 1-1 in Creedmoor

The Southern Vance varsity boys basketball team split on the first two days of competition at South Granville’s holiday tournament. The Raiders lost to Raleigh Athens Drive 57-49 Thursday and bounced back with a 45-42 win over Louisburg Friday.

Southern faces Raleigh Sanderson at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the final round of competition.

Cameron Evans led the Raiders Friday with nine points. Jahun Ricks and De’Vante Henderson both had eight.

Ty-Traveon Roberts had 23 points for Southern Thursday.

Warren County lost to Cary Green Hope Thursday at South Granville and was scheduled to face Sanderson Friday.

Vikings up against stiff competition at East Lincoln

The Northern Vance boys are 0-2 at the East Lincoln Winter Jam tourney with losses to Charlotte Mallard Creek and East Lincoln.

The Vikings opened with a 58-40 loss to Mallard Creek Thursday before a 56-48 defeat to East Lincoln Friday. Mallard Creek is one of the top-rated teams in 4-A and advanced to face another talented 4-A school, Ardrey Kell of Charlotte.

Le’Darius Brandon had 17 points against Mallard Creek to lead Northern and Tavin Moore added nine.

Brandon had a huge game against East Lincoln with 27, 25 of which came in the second half. Moore chipped in with seven.

“He went into a zone,” Viking coach Wilton Baskett said of Brandon. “Not only was he scoring, but he was making the right moves.”

Northern concludes its stay in the tourney with a match against Harrisburg Hickory Ridge Saturday at 4 p.m.

Northern girls lose twice in Lee County

The Northern Vance varsity girls basketball team has two losses at the Lee County Invitational after Friday’s 62-54 defeat to Southern Lee.

The Vikings lost to Apex 81-42 Thursday.

Kechae Parker led Northern with 25 points against Southern Lee and Tanaua White had 20.

Northern cut a 20-point lead down to 12 in the second half against Apex, but couldn’t get any closer.

“I was proud of our effort, we just ran out of gas,” said Viking coach Randolph Crews Jr. “They hit us in waves and wore us down.”

White led Northern Thursday with 28 points and Parker had 10.
