Local Roundup: Raiders, Vikings compete in swim meet
The Northern and Southern Vance swimming teams competed in a meet against Roanoke Rapids, Louisburg and Franklinton Wednesday at Aycock Rec Center.
Roanoke Rapids won the boys meet with 126 points, followed by Northern (89), Southern (31), Louisburg (12), and Franklinton (11).
The Yellow Jackets also took the girls meet with 126 points, followed by Northern (52), Franklinton (50), Louisburg (42), and Southern Vance (18).
Northern broke a four-year-old boys record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:03.20. Roanoke Rapids won the race, finishing in 1:58.79.
Ray Cheever was the lone area winner, taking the 100 backstroke in 1:07.53. Cheever also recorded a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Ethan Parham (200, 500 freestyle) and Nick Sharpe (200 individual medley) also had second-place finishes for Northern.
Madison Bobbitt finished second for the Viking girls in the 500 free. She took third in the 200 free. Logan Brinker (50 free) and Mallory Falkner (100 breaststroke) logged third-place finishes for Northern as well.
Sarah Stanton was the top performer for Southern’s girls, taking third in the 100 free. Harley Owen was fourth in the 100 backstroke for the Raiders.
Southern girls best Red Rams
The Southern Vance varsity girls basketball team defeated Franklinton 40-30 Wednesday.
Breona Jones led the Lady Raiders with 15 points, Moesha Sneed had eight points and Rashyda Burwell finished with seven.
Southern improved to 9-1 on the season and begins play in its Christmas tourney next Thursday at 7 p.m.
