The Southern Vance softball team put a scare into host Northeastern before giving up six runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings of its 10-5 first round 2-A state playoff loss Wednesday.

The Lady Raiders (7-10), a wild card entry, went up 3-0 in the fourth, getting RBIs from Mikayla Sellers and Alicia Shearin.

After the Lady Eagles (15-2), the champion out of the Northeastern Coastal Conference, responded with four of their own, Southern Vance struck again to lead 5-4 thanks to an RBI triple from Brittany West.

Northeastern took control for good in the bottom of the fifth after a bases clearing double by Delanie Winslow.

The Eagles advanced to the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs to meet either No. 2 North Lenoir (14-3) or No. 3 North Johnston (14-5).

Southern finished fifth in the Northern Carolina Conference. Only the top four teams from each league receive autmatic playoff bids, but the Raiders earned an at-large berth.

Southern will lose five seniors for next season.
