Webb wins physical matchup with Northern

Stefan Cates scored 16 points, Devonte Williams had 12 points and J.F. Webb claimed a 65-53 win Monday on Northern Vance’s Senior Night.

Cates shot 11-of-12 at the free throw line for Webb, which shot 27-of-43 from the charity stripe for the game. Northern was 11-of-22.

Webb and Northern each start the 3-A Big Eight Conference Tournament on Wednesday.

The Warriors outscored the Vikings 25-13 in the second quarter to take a 37-25 halftime lead.

Northern used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to trim the lead to five before going into the final period down nine points.

Webb gave the Vikings a steady dose of driving to the bucket in the fourth. The Warriors shot 12-of-17 at the foul line in the fourth, led by Cates’ 9-of-10 performance.

Nykwanza Henderson and Desedric Downey each scored nine points for Webb and Tyrek Beverly added eight points.

Henderson and Cates connected for the highlight play of the game midway through the second quarter. Henderson hit Cates for a two-handed alley-oop slam to put Webb up seven and ignite the Warriors’ travelling contingent.

Kris Haywood and James Alexander each had 15 points for Northern, which honored 11 seniors. They are Tyree Williams, Malik Williams, Scott Hamrick, Tim Buchanan, Arnold Bullock, Erdaywin Lewis, Anthony Mims, Jemario Marrow, Tommie Reed, Dyquan Marrow, Tavin Moore.
