Northern’s Cheever breaks school record; Vikings defeat Raiders

Dec. 07, 2012 @ 01:06 AM

Ray Cheever set a new Northern Vance standard in the 100-meter backstroke Thursday as both the Viking boys and girls earned wins over crosstown rival Southern Vance at Aycock Rec Center.
Northern won the boys meet 108-27 and scored an 88-25 victory in the girls competition.
Cheever’s mark of 1:07:56 clipped the previous 100 backstroke record, set in 1997, by 44 hundredths of a second.
Northern coach Natasha Rubin expected Cheever to have a shot at the record this season. Rubin said after the team’s previous meet, she talked to the sophomore about nailing his turns and finishing to the wall.
The record was a regional consideration time for Cheever. He also finished first and had a regional consideration time in the 200 individual medley.
Also posting regional consideration times for Northern were Nick Sharpe (200 IM), Ethan Parham (100 butterfly, 500 freestyle) and the 200 free relay team of Sharpe, Parham, Clayton Harris, and Evan Lowery.
C.J. Ayscue (200 free) and Evan Lowery (50 free, 100 free) also had individual wins for Northern. In addition to the 200 free relay win, the Viking boys were victorious in the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Rubin said she’s been impressed with junior Clayton Harris, a newcomer that has been “dropping times left and right,” becoming one of the team’s fastest sprinters. Harris was second in the 100 free and swam in the 200 and 400 free relays.
Madison Bobbitt and Mallory Falkner both posted two individual wins for Northern’s girls. Bobbitt won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke and Falkner finished first in the 500 free and 100 breaststroke.
Alyson Moseley (50 free), Sarah Jackson (100 fly) and Logan Brinker (100 free) also had individual wins for the Viking girls.
The Northern girls won each relay race.
Overall, the Vikings have an upperclassmen-heavy team.
“I have a lot of seniors, a lot of leadership,” said Rubin. “So I’m going to enjoy it while I have it.”
The Raiders have considerably less experience on their roster.
Both teams were coming off of matches against conference opponents. Northern previously battled Orange and Cardinal Gibbons while Southern faced Chapel Hill.
“It was nice to back in our home pool swimming against Northern,” said first-year Raider coach Jack Long. “I thought the kids did well. We have a lot of new swimmers that are working to improve their strokes and times.”
Kyle Furlow and Sarah Beth Stanton both registered wins for Southern, Furlow in the boys 100 breaststroke and Stanton in the girls 200 free. Stanton’s mark of 2:47.06 was a personal best.
“They’re two of my stronger, more athletic swimmers that I have that can really pound the water and get it done,” said Long.
Harley Owen finished second in the 100 free for the Raider girls, just 34 hundredths of a second behind Brinker’s winning time.
The Raiders are back at Aycock Thursday, Dec. 13 against Orange. Northern will swim against Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Wednesday.
