Does the new concealed carry law apply to Kerr Lake?
Whether or not weapons are allowed in state parks has been a question that park rangers are asked frequently. In general, weapons (firearms, air guns, bows and arrows, slingshots or lethal missiles of any kind) have always been prohibited in state parks.
However, there is an exception in most state parks for concealed weapons properly permitted.
Firearms and other weapons are prohibited except that those with a proper permit may possess a concealed handgun in permitted areas. All firearms and weapons are prohibited in state park visitor centers and park offices.
The new policy concerning concealed weapons applies to all state parks except those state park areas located on three reservoirs managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: Kerr Lake state recreation area, Fall Lake SRA, Jordan Lake SRA.
In these three parks, visitors may not carry a concealed weapon. This is because the land used by the state for Kerr Lake SRA, Jordan Lake SRA, and Falls Lake.
SRA is actually leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a federal agency, and therefore federal rules and regulations supersede those of the state.
